Ich sah mich selbst, den Spaten in der Hand,
Ich grub ein Grab am fernsten Friedhofsrand,
Grub Nacht um Nacht, wie bluteten die Hände!
Und fand kein Ende.

Sprach eine Stimme: Hältst du noch nicht ein?
Soll denn mein Grab noch immer tiefer sein? --
Und Antwort scholl mit trüb verhalt'nem Klange:
"Mir ist so bange."

Ich grab' so tief, daß Frieden um dich sei,
Daß nicht zur Nacht mein wilder Sehnsuchtsschrei
Und nicht das Brausen ferner Lebenschöre
Den Schlaf dir störe."
