Ah! que la joie est triste aux cœurs malheureux!
Plus vif est leur plaisir,
Plus grande est ma détresse!
O souvenir trop douloureux!
Azaël, Azaël! Pourquoi m'as tu quittée?
Sur quelle rive désertée,
Peut-être loin de nous,
Ces fils que j'amais entre tous
Souffre-t-il seul et faible, en implorant sa mère.
Que vois je? Un pauvre voyageur
Par la fatigue, ou la misère,
Au détour de la route étendu sur la terre!
Secouronsle! 
Dans son malheur, loin du foyer de son père
Peut-être il se désespère...
Mon fils? inanimé? Cet pâleur de mort?
Non, non! c'est impossible!

Forse, su una spiaggia deserta,
lontano da noi,
questo figlio che fra tutti amavo,
soffre debole e solo e implora sua madre...
Ma cosa vedo? Un povero viandante,
per la fatica o la fame
è steso a terra alla svolta della strada!
Soccorriamolo!
