Ohne Mondlicht, ohne Sterne,
Ohne Lied der Nachtigall,
Drückt auf alle Näh' und Ferne
[Deiner Nebel]1 dunkler Schwall.

Ungesehn und still wie Geister,
Die von Stern zu Sterne ziehn,
Wandelt nur die blasse Sehnsucht,
Leise klagend, her und hin.

Nun liegen die Wälder in Glanz und Duft
wie unter silberner Hülle.
Ich weiß einen Ort, da blühen jetzt
die wilden Rosen in Fülle.

Und geh' ich vorüber, so stecke ich wohl
die schönsten mir sinnend ans Mieder,
und traumverloren im Weitergeh'n
zerpflück' ich sie spielend wieder.

Ihr armen Rosen, beklagt euch nicht!
Mein Los ist tausendmal trüber:
Am Wegesrand verblüht meine Lieb',
und er geht achtlos vorüber.
