Unser Haus und Nachbars Haus
Stehn so eng beisammen,
Daß, wenn es in einem brennt,
Beide Häuser flammen. 

Uns're Gärten sind so nah,
Daß von Baum zu Bäumen
Blüthenduft herüberweht
Mit gar holden Träumen.

Und so niedrig ist der Zaun, 
Daß wir sinnend stehen
Und mit stummer Frage uns
In die Augen sehen,

Ja, in einer Dämmerstund',
Als wir uns dort fanden,
Haben wir mit Blick und Mund
Liebe uns gestanden. 

Und seither wir Beide stehn
So vereint beisammen,
Daß die Herzen gluthenreich
In einander flammen.

Nun kann die Lieb' ich ermessen,
Die mich zum Thoren gemacht!
