2. When twilight dews are falling  [sung text not yet checked]

Language: English
When twilight dews are falling soft
   Upon the rosy sea, love,
I watch the star, whose beam so oft
Has lighted me to thee, love.
And thou too, on that orb so dear,
   Dost often gaze at even,
And think, though lost for ever here,
Thou'lt yet be mine in heaven.

There's not a garden walk I tread,
   There's not a flower I see, love,
But brings to mind some hope that's fled,
Some joy that's gone with thee, love.
And still I wish that hour was near,
   When, friends and foes forgiven,
The pains, the ills we've wept through here,
May turn to smiles in heaven.

  • by Thomas Moore (1779 - 1852), "When twilight dews", appears in The Poetical Works of Thomas Moore, first published 1841

6. A Thought of Home at Sea
 (Sung text)

Language: English
'Tis lone on the waters
    When Eve's mournful bell
Sends forth to the sunset
    A note of farewell!

When borne with the shadows
    And winds as they sweep,
There comes a fond memory
    Of Home o'er the deep!

When the wing of the sea-bird
    Is turned to her nest,
And the thought of the sailor
    To all he loves best.

'Tis lone on the waters —
    That hour hath a spell
To bring back sweet voices
     With words of farewell!

Text Authorship:

  • by Felicia Dorothea Hemans (1793 - 1835), "A Thought of Home at Sea"

Note: the Schlesinger score contains a typo in stanza 3 line 1: "sea-dird".

9. Summer's Madrigal  [sung text not yet checked]

Language: English
Hark, how sweet the thrushes sing!
Hark, how clear the robins call!
Chorus of the happy spring,
     Summer's madrigal!

Flood the world with joy and cheer,
O ye birds, and pour your song
Till the farthest distance hear
     Notes so glad and strong!

Storm the earth with odors sweet,
O ye flowers, that blaze in light!
Crowd about June's shining feet,
     All ye blossoms bright.

Shout, ye waters, to the sun!
     Back are winter's fetters hurled;
Summer's glory is begun;
     Beauty holds the world!
