Schwer tränt der Regen von den dunklen Zweigen, Die über unser'n Häuptern tief sich breiten. Die Blätter neigen sich im Trauerreigen Wie flüchtige Schatten, die vorübergleiten. Das tat der Sturm mit seinen Geißelhieben, Der hier uns wild im Wetter trieb zusammen. Er schwieg, und nur der Regen ist geblieben, Zu löschen uns'rer heißen Liebe Flammen. Er aber lehrte uns mit seinem Weinen Den Wonnebecher schäumend auszutrinken, In Nacht und Einsamkeit uns zu vereinen, Gluttrunken, bebend Brust an Brust zu sinken.

Riesle, lauer Abendregen, Auf die welken Blumen nieder! Jedem Helmlein an den Wegen Gib dein Schlummertränklein wieder! Netze leis mit kühlem Taue Meines Gärtchens einzige Rose! Lab die Veilchen auf der Aue, Lab im Wald die durstigen Moose! Taubetränte Zweige wiegen. Dunkelfeuchte Blätter rauschen. Möchte tief darunter liegen, Deiner Flüsterweise lauschen!

Jüngst kehrte ich zurücke Aus fernen, fremden Landen. Hab lang auf der alten Brücke In Nacht und Sturm gestanden. Der Mond schien weiß auf den Weiler, Das Wasser rauschte vorbei. Der Wind pfiff durch die Pfeiler Eine traurige Melodei. Die Wellen rauschten und rauschten Wohl zu des Windes Wehen. All meine Sinne lauschten, Mußt' immer hinuntersehen. Mußt' denken an jene Stunde, Dereinst ich von dir schied. - Gibst du mir letzte Kunde, Du alt vergessenes Lied?

Dann wandeln wir zu Zwei'n durch selige Auen, Die Lippen neigen sich zum ersten Kuß; Dann wollen wir vereint den Frühling schauen, Der keines Winters Nacht entfliehen muß. Der Rose Tränen uns're Stirne netzen, So weilen wir in stummer Einsamkeit. So wollen wir an heiliger Ruh' uns letzen Und denken einstiger Lieb' aus ferner Zeit.
