L'air était doux. C'était l'heure où le jour décline ; L'azur ensoleillé souriait doucement. Le vent du soir chantait sur la haute colline, Dans le ciel parfumé montait un bruit charmant. Car les oiseaux sentant venir la nuit tranquille Saluaient le coucher d'un beau jour glorieux ; Et l'écho chuchotait, et le bois immobile Longuement y mêlait son murmure soyeux. La rose s'inclinait mollement sur sa tige Et versait ses parfums dans un demi-sommeil : Et l'on aurait passé, comme pris de vertige, Sa vie à rêver là des rêves sans réveil.
