Ich hörte heute morgen am Klippenhang die Stare schon,
sie sangen wie daheim, und doch war es ein andrer Ton,
Und blaue Veilchen blühten auf allen Hägeln bis zur See.
In meiner Heimat Feldern liegt in den Furchen noch der Schnee.
In meiner Stadt im Norden stehn sieben Brücken, grau und greis,
an ihre morschen Pfähle treibt dumpf und schütternd jetzt das Eis.
Und über graue Wolken es fein und engelslieblich klingt.
Und meiner Heimat Kinder verstehen, was die erste Lerche singt.

kamt ihr alle als ein nacktes Kind,
Frierend lagt ihr ohne alle Hab',
als ein Weib euch eine Windel gab.

Keiner schrieb euch, ihr wart nicht begehrt,
und man holte euch nicht im Gefährt.
Hier auf Erden wart ihr unbekannt,
als ein Mann euch einst nahm an der Hand.

Von der Erde voller kaltem Wind
geht ihr all' bedeckt mit Schorf und Grind,
fast ein jeder hat die Welt geliebt,
wenn man ihm zwei Hände Erde gibt.
