Four Songs of Fairyland

by Helena M. Bland

1. The way to fairyland
 (Sung text)

Language: English
     Oh, if I knew at all
     The way to grow quite small,
And if a pair of wings I could but borrow,
     And if I did but know
     The proper way to go,
I'd fly away to Fairy-land to-morrow"

     There all the summer day
     I'd sleep the hours away,
A roof of cool and shady green above me ;
     And all the summer night
     I'd dance to music light,
And all the little fairy men would love me!

2. The April lady
 (Sung text)

Language: English
The April lady's come to town,
    Drest in her fine array,
And if you wander in the Park
    You'll find her there to-day.
        Gown all of gossamer,
            Oh, so fair to see,
        She's come straight from Rainbow-land,
            With gifts for you and me.

The April lady smiles to see
    The children all at play,
She scatters blossoms on the ground
    To please them every day.
        Gown all of, etc.

The April lady's come to town,
    I met her yesterday;
But oh! it grieves my heart to think
    How short will be her stay !
        Gown all of, etc.

3. Sun and moon
 (Sung text)

Language: English
The sun-child plays in the garden green,
    All day, my dear, all day :
The daisies show us where he has been,-
    Run out and join his play 1
The birds sing high in the trees above,
All for the sake of the child they love.
Run out, my dear, run out and play,
Run out, my dear, and play !

The moon-child plays in the garden green,
    All night, my love, all night ;
The trees are drest in their silver sheen,
    The stars are clear and bright;
But you must sleep now the day is gone,
And leave the moon-child to play alone,
Good-night, my love, my love, good-night !
Good-night, my love, good-night !

4. Little mermaids
 (Sung text)

Language: English
Deep down below the shining waves
Are all the little mermaide' caves;
I often sit beside the sea,
And think how lovely it would be
To dive beneath the waves,
And find the pretty mermaids'caves I

For all the little children there
Have silver tails and golden hair ;
Oh, think how jolly it must be
To float about the sea,
And chase the fishes to and fro,
And then to bunt for pearls below 1

I wonder if they go to school,
And what they do there as a rule,
And if twice one is always two,
And if counting's very hard to do?
I wonder if, when supper's done,
They kiss "Good-night" to every one?
And if the pretty mothers there
Comb out the little mermaids' hair,
And tuck them up all warm and tight,
And sing them lullabies at night !
