Herab so bang und schwer,
Wir beide traurig gingen
Im Garten hin und her.

So [heiß und]2 stumm, so trübe
[Und]3 sternlos war die Nacht,
So ganz, wie unsre Liebe,
Zu Tränen nur gemacht.

Und als ich mußte scheiden
Und gute Nacht [dir]4 bot,
Wünscht' ich bekümmert beiden
Im Herzen uns den Tod.

Ich muß es einsam tragen,
Darf keinem Menschen sagen
Was still mein Herze hehlt;
Ach, könnt' ich's selbst verstehen, 
Weiß nicht, wie mir geschehen,
Was mich beglückt und quält.

Die Brust will mir zerspringen,
Ich möchte lachen und singen, 
Daß ich so glücklich bin.
Und wieder möcht' ich weinen, -- 
Und muß doch ruhig scheinen,
Als läg' mir nichts im Sinn. 

Ich hab' den Tag versäumet 
Und nur von ihm geträumet, 
Vergaß die Welt umher. 
O, stieg' der Abend nieder, 
Daß ich erst heimlich wieder 
Mit ihm zusammen wär.
