Du stolzes Herz! du hast es ja gewollt,
Du wolltest glücklich seyn, unendlich glücklich
Oder unendlich elend, stolzes Herz,
Und jetzo bist du elend.

Translation of title "Der Atlas" = "Atlas"
Translator's note: Atlas oli kreikkalaisessa mytologiassa titaani, joka johti kapinaa ylijumala Zeusta vastaan, ja sai rangaistuksenaan kannatella loputtomasti taivaankantta harteillaan. Nimi Atlas tarkoittanee erään teorian mukaan ”hän, joka kärsii niin paljon.”
