Ich bin auch in Ravenna gewesen, Ist eine kleine, tote Stadt, Die Kirchen und viel Ruinen hat, Man kann davon in den Büchern lesen. Du gehst hindurch und schaust dich um, Die Straßen sind so trüb und naß Und sind so tausendjährig stumm, Und überall wächst Moos und Gras! Das ist wie alte Lieder sind, Man hört sie an und keiner lacht Ein jeder lauscht und jeder sinnt Hernach daran bis in die Nacht.

Jo també he estat a Ravenna, és una petita ciutat morta, que té esglésies i moltes ruïnes, que hom pot llegir als llibres. Tu hi passes a través i esguardes l’entorn, els carrers són tan llòbrecs i humits i muts des de fa mil·lenis, i arreu hi creixen molses i herbes! És com les velles cançons, hom les escolta i ningú riu, i cadascú para l’orella i cadascú hi pensa més tard fins a la nit.

Les dones de Ravenna porten, amb profunds esguards i delicats gestos, a dintre seu una sapiència dels dies de l’antiga ciutat i les seves festes. Les dones de Ravenna ploren com els infants bon minyons: intensament i fluixet. I quan elles riuen, il·luminen amb claredat els textos ombrius. Les dones de Ravenna preguen com els infants: dolçament i amb modèstia. Elles poden dir mots d’amor sense saber que menteixen. Les dones de Ravenna besen amb un fervor estrany i intens. I de la vida no saben res més que tots un dia hem de morir.
