by Gustav Götze

Return to the original list

1. Der Brautring  [sung text not yet checked]
by Gustav Götze , "Der Brautring", op. 10 (Zwei Lieder für 1 Singstimme mit Pianofortebegleitung) no. 1, published 1900 [ voice and piano ], Berlin, Ries & Erler

Text Authorship:

  • by Anna (Nuhn) Ritter (1865 - 1921), "Brautring", appears in Befreiung. Neue Gedichte, in 1. Aus seliger Zeit , no. 4

1. The engagement ring
Language: English
As the moonlight flowed over the lilacs,
He secretly placed a ring on my finger,
And kissed the ring and the hand as well
And listened blissfully to the first [familiar] "you."

The moonlight looked into the ring,
That created a joyful, bright radiance,
The lilac bush silently inclined its blossoms,
The grasses breathed: "Happiness is wandering about!"

Language: German (Deutsch)
War ich gar so jung und dumm,
Wollte gerne wissen:
"Warum ist mein Mund so roth?"
Sprach der Mai:
             "Zum Küssen."

Als der Nebel schlich durch's Land,
Hab' ich fragen müssen:
"Warum ist mein Mund so blaß?"
Sprach der Herbst:
             "Vom Küssen."

  • by Anna (Nuhn) Ritter (1865 - 1921), "Vom Küssen", appears in Gedichte, in 2. Vermischte Gedichte, no. 38

2.
Language: English
I was utterly young and silly,
I dearly wished to know:
"Why are my lips so red?"
Maytime spoke:
             "For kissing."

As the mists crept through the land,
I was forced to ask:
"Why are my lips so pale?"
Autumn spoke:
             "From kissing."
