Herab so bang und schwer,
Wir beide traurig gingen
Im Garten hin und her.

So [heiß und]2 stumm, so trübe
[Und]3 sternlos war die Nacht,
So ganz, wie unsre Liebe,
Zu Tränen nur gemacht.

Und als ich mußte scheiden
Und gute Nacht [dir]4 bot,
Wünscht' ich bekümmert beiden
Im Herzen uns den Tod.

Els ombrívols núvols suraven
cap avall, tan angoixants i opressius,
nosaltres dos caminàvem
pel jardí, d’un costat a l’altre.

La nit sense estrelles era
tan sufocant, silent i trista
com el nostre amor,
creat tan sols per a les llàgrimes.

I quan jo havia de marxar
i et vaig desitjar bona nit,
afligit, desitjava de tot cor
la mort per a tots dos.

Durch den Wald, den dunkeln, geht
Holde Frühlingsmorgenstunde, 
Durch den Wald vom Himmel weht
Eine leise Liebeskunde.

Selig lauscht der grüne Baum,
Und er taucht mit allen Zweigen
In den schönen Frühlingstraum,
In den vollen Lebensreigen.

Blüht ein [Blümlein]1 irgendwo,
Wird's vom hellen Tau getränket,
Das [einsame]2 zittert froh,
Daß der Himmel sein gedenket.

In geheimer Laubesnacht
Wird des Vogels Herz getroffen
Von der [großen Liebesmacht]3,
Und er singt ein süßes Hoffen.

All' das frohe Lenzgeschick 
Nicht ein Wort des Himmels kündet,
Nur sein stummer, warmer Blick
Hat die Seligkeit entzündet;

Also in den Winterharm,
Der die Seele hielt bezwungen,
Ist dein Blick mir, still und warm,
Frühlingsmächtig eingedrungen.

Per el bosc obscur arriba
l’hora encisadora del matí de primavera,
per el bosc alena des del cel,
un suau vaticini d’amor.

Feliç, l’escolta l’arbre verdejant
i s’endinsa, amb totes les branques,
en el bell somni primaveral,
en el ple cercle de la vida.

Si apareix una flor en algun lloc,
esdevé xopa de clara rosada,
solitària, tremola contenta
de què el cel sigui agraït.

En la recòndita nit al fullam,
el cor de l’ocell és colpit
per el gran poder de l’amor
i canta en dolça esperança.

Tot aquest art primaveral,
no proclama cap mot celestial,
només el seu silenciós, càlid esguard,
ha abrandat la benaurança;

així, dins l’angoixa de l’hivern,
que tenia sotmesa l’ànima,
el teu esguard silenciós i càlid,
amb força primaveral, ha penetrat en mi.
