  Und weithin klang 
  Der Zwiegesang
Das mondbeglänzte Thal entlang.

  Was sang das Vöglein im Gezweig
Durch die stille, schöne Maiennacht?
Was sang doch wohl das Mägdlein [gleich]1
Durch die stille, schöne Maiennacht?
Von Frühlingssonne das Vögelein,
Von Liebeswonne das Mägdelein.
  Wie der Gesang 
  Zum Herzen [drang]2,

Tra le fronde di lillà stava un uccellino
nella quieta, dolce notte di maggio,
là sotto, tra l'erba alta, una fanciulla
nella quieta, dolce notte di maggio.
Cantava la fanciulla, l'uccellino stava muto,
cantava l'uccellino, la fanciulla lo ascoltava,
e da lontano si udiva 
il duplice canto,
per tutta la valle risplendente di luna.

Che cosa cantava l'uccellino fra i rami
nella quieta, dolce notte di maggio?
E che cosa mai cantava la fanciulla
nella quieta, dolce notte di maggio?
Del sole primaverile l'uccellino,
delle gioie dell'amore la fanciulla;
come questo canto 
giungeva al cuore,
non lo dimenticherò per tutta la vita.

Im Rosenbusch die Liebe schlief,
Der Frühling kam, der Frühling rief;
Die Liebe hört's, die Lieb' erwacht,
Schaut aus der Knosp' hervor und lacht,
Und denkt, zu zeitig möcht's [halt]1 sein
Und schläft [drum]2 ruhig wieder ein.

Der Frühling aber läßt nicht nach,
Er küßt sie jeden Morgen wach,
Er kos't mit ihr von früh bis spat,
Bis sie ihr Herz geöffnet hat
Und seine [heiße]3 Sehnsucht stillt,
Und jeden Sonnenblick vergilt.4

venne l'Aprile, l'Aprile chiamò;
l'Amore sente, l'Amore si sveglia,
guarda fuorii dai boccioli e ride.
E pensa di essere ancora in tempo
e si addormenta di nuovo, tranquilla.

Ma l'Aprile non la lascia in pace,
la sveglia ogni mattina con un bacio,
amoreggia con lei continuamente,
fin che lei apre il suo cuore
e spegne il suo ardente desiderio,
e ricambia ogni sguardo di sole.
