Was mag doch die Alte haben?
Sie weint, [so oft]4 sie's erblickt? --

What then does the elderly one do?
She weeps when she sees it.

Wenn die Stern' am Himmel blinken, 
Wenn ihr Reigen nächtlich webt, 
Künde treu mir, wo der erste, 
Wo der Sterne letzter schwebt?

Wenn im regen Wogentanze 
Welle mit der Welle tauscht, 
O so zeig' mir, wo die erste, 
Wo der Wellen letzte rauscht?

Und vermagst du's, so gib Kunde,
Löse mir das Schwerste frei. 
Wann im Herzen wohl die Stunde 
Erster, - letzter Liebe sei?
