Sie sind erlesen schon,
Denk' es, o Seele!
Auf deinem Grab zu wurzeln
Und zu wachsen.

Zwei schwarze Rößlein weiden
Auf der Wiese,
Sie kehren heim zur Stadt
In [muntern]1 Sprüngen.
Sie werden schrittweis gehn
Mit deiner Leiche;
[Vielleicht, vielleicht noch eh']2
An ihren Hufen
Das Eisen los wird,
Das ich blitzen sehe!

Qui sait où, en forêt,
Un buisson de roses, qui dira
En quel jardin ?
Ils ont déjà appris,
Penses-y, ô mon âme,
À s'enraciner sur ta tombe
Et à y pousser.

Deux petits chevaux noirs paissent
Dans la prairie,
Ils retournent à la ville,
Caracolant gaiement.
Ils iront de la même allure
Avec ta dépouille ;
Peut-être, peut-être même avant
Que de leurs sabots
Le fer ne parte
Et que j'en voie l'éclair.
