Ruhig ist des Todes Schlummer

Set by Heinrich Schnaubelt (1814 - 1871), "Ruhig ist des Todes Schlummer", op. 42 no. 27, published 1871 [ men's chorus a cappella ], from Lieder-Album für Männergesang, no. 27, Regensburg, Georg Joseph Manz [Sung Text]

Note: this setting is made up of several separate texts.

Ruhig ist des Todes Schlummer
Und der Schooß der Erde kühl,
Dann stöhrt unsre Ruh kein Kummer
Nicht der Leidenschaften Spiel;
Unsre Sorgen groß und klein
Schlummern alle mit uns ein.

Über unsern Hügel schwinget
Die Vergessenheit den Stab,
Und der Schmähsucht Stimme dringet
Nicht ins stille dunkle Grab;
Fehler die uns hier besiegt,
Werden dort nicht mehr gerügt.

Möchte bald die Stunde kommen,
wo mein ganz befreiter Geist
von der Erde weggenommen
dich nun ewig glücklich preist!
Zitt're, Seele, länger nicht,
wenn des Körpers Bau zerbricht!
