by Emanuel von Geibel (1815 - 1884)

Die Sonne brannte heiß am Tage
Language: English
Die Sonne brannte heiß am Tage,
Nun wird es auf den Abend kühl,
Die Wolken ziehn in dunkler Lage,
Und durch die Luft weht Harfenspiel.
Mir ist so eigen, [ist]1 so trübe,
Mein Herz strebt in die Ferne fort!
Es denkt an seine alte Liebe
Und sinnt auf eine verloren Wort.

Umsonst! Ich werd´ ihn nimmer finden,
Den Spruch, der Seelen binden mag,
Warum auch gab ich ihn den Winden,
Da er auf meinen Lippen lag!
Ach! Immer [finstrer]2 wird der Schatten;
Ich steh´ allein in öder Nacht,
Und keine Stätte harrt des Matten,
Und niemand ist, der mit mir wacht.
