Zwei [Wanderer]1 zogen hinaus zum Thor, Zur herrlichen Alpenwelt empor. Der Eine ging, weil's Mode just, Den Andern trieb der [Drang in der]2 Brust. Und als daheim nun wieder die Zwei, Da [rückt die ganze Sippe]3 herbei, Da [wirbelt's]4 von Fragen ohne Zahl: «Was habt ihr gesehn? Erzählt einmal!» Der eine drauf mit Gähnen spricht: "Was wir gesehn? Viel Rares nicht! Ach, Bäume, Wiesen, Bach und Hain, Und blauen Himmel und Sonnenschein!" Der Andere lächelnd dasselbe spricht, Doch leuchtenden Blicks, mit verklärtem Gesicht: "Ei, Bäume, Wiesen, Bach und Hain, Und blauen Himmel und Sonnenschein!"
