Beim Grabe einer Schwester
Language: German (Deutsch)
Gottes Saat!  Im Todesschlummer
Reifst du hier der Erndte zu;
Gingst auf dieser Welt voll Kummer
Früh zur namenlosen Ruh!

Wohl dir!  deiner Seele Leiden
Sind auf ewig nun verbannt;
Lieblich fiel dein Loos der Freuden,
Denn es fiel in Gottes Hand.1

Wo du nun im Chor der Engel
An des Mittlers Throne knie'st,
Und auf diese Erdenmängel
Voller Mitleid nieder siehst.

Ach!  mit hoffendem Entzücken
Will ich, wenn mir Schrecken dräun,
Hin zu jenen Höhen blicken,
Und des Erndtetags mich freun!

Bis ich auch zu Freuden komme,
Die mir unvergänglich blühn,
Und, wie du, verklärte Fromme!
Ewig  --  ewig glücklich bin!

View original text (without footnotes)

Confirmed with Schlesische Provinzialblätter, fünfundzwanzigster Band, Breslau: bei Wilhelm Gottlieb Korn, 1797. Appears in Viertes Stück: April 1797, Anhang, page 80, with the author identified only as "S." Note: Beneken adds a stanza after the second stanza above. It may have come from a later edition of the poem, but we have not yet found a source for it. It may alternatively have been written by the composer himself.

1 Beneken adds:
Ruht' ich doch, wie du, in Frieden!
Endete sich bald mein Lauf!
Diese Erdewandelns müde,
Blick ich sehnend zu dir auf;
