Die Linde
Language: German (Deutsch)
Our translations:  ENG
O Lindenbaum, welch schöner Traum
Ist dir beschert vor allen:
Du blühst, wenn längst jedwedem Baum
Die Blüten sind entfallen.

Wenn glühend brennt der Sonne Strahl,
Und schon die Früchte schwellen,
Da sendest du hinab in's Thal
Weithin der Düfte Wellen.

O könnt' auch ich, wenn mir verweht
Der Jugendtraum im Winde,
Noch blühen fort im Leben spät
Wie du, süßduftge Linde!

The linden tree
NOTE: the footnotes have been removed from this text; return to general view
Language: English  after the German (Deutsch)
Oh linden tree, what a lovely dream
Has been granted to you before all others:
You bloom when from all other trees
The blossoms have long fallen.

When the sun's beams burn glowingly
And the fruits are already swelling,
Then you send down into the valley
Far and wide the waves of scent.

Oh, could I, too, when the dream of youth
Has dissipated in the wind for me,
Still blossom on late in life,
Like you, sweet-scented linden tree!
