Tenebrae factae sunt, dum crucifixissent Jesum Judaei: et circa horam nonam exclamavit Jesus voce magna: Deus meus, ut quid me dereliquisti? Et inclinato capite, emisit spiritum. Exclamans Jesus voce magna, ait: Pater, in manus tuas commendo spiritum meum.
About the headline (FAQ)
View text with all available footnotesHistorical note: there is no basis in scripture or history for the portrayal of the Jewish people as the crucifiers of Jesus Christ. This long-standing charge of collective guilt was eventually repudiated by the Catholic Church at the second Vatican Council in 1965. Performers may opt to change the last word in the first line to "Nazarenum" instead (with thanks to Ian Pomerantz).
