from Volkslieder (Folksongs)
Translation by Georg Friedrich Daumer (1800 - 1875)

Mutter, Mutter! Ich muß sterben
Language: German (Deutsch)  after the Russian (Русский)
Mutter, Mutter! Ich muß sterben. --
Ei, warum so rasch verderben? --
Auch muß sie ihr Leben lassen. --
Sage mir, wer soll erblassen? --
Nasta stirbt und ich vergehe,
Giebst du sie nicht gleich zur Ehe. --
Ist es in der That so dringend? --
Sieh, o sieh mich händeringend!
Nasta sieh in Thränen baden,
Und beschließe rasche Gnaden! --
Nun so kommt, ihr tollen Kinder!
Denn ich weine schon nicht minder.
Knieet und empfangt die Weihe,
Die ich eurem Bund verleihe!
Es beströme, wie ein Regen
Euch des Himmels bester Segen;
Aller höchsten Wonne froh,
Liebet euch ohn' Ende so!
