by George Gordon Noel Byron, Lord Byron (1788 - 1824)

On my wedding day
Language: English
Here's a happy New Year! but with reason
I beg you'll permit me to say --
Wish me many returns of the Season,
But as few as you please of the Day.

Note: Medwin (Conversations, 1824, p. 156) prints the following alternative for the last two lines:

You may wish me returns of the season,
Let us, prithee, have none of the day!
