Was Gott aus dem Staube erschuf,
Der Wächter allein auf dem Thurme noch wacht,
Und kündet's mit schallendem Ruf: 
Ho -- ha ho! 

So ferne von Liebe, von Leben und Licht,
Es ist wohl ein harter Beruf,
Doch übet der Thürmer getreu seine Pflicht,
Und kündet's mit schallendem Ruf: 
Ho -- ha -- ho! 

Ein Reiter noch einsam die Straßen durchbraust, 
Gott weiß es zu welchem Behuf! 
Der hört es wohl gerne, daß Einer hier haust
Der's kündet mit schallendem Ruf:

Da jagt er von hinnen! -- O schönes Geschick! --
Noch donnert von Ferne sein Huf; --
Der Thürmer doch blieb und sein Sehnen zurück,
