't Is stille
(Sung text for setting by R. Mengelberg)
 See original
Language: Dutch (Nederlands)
  Tempus edax ...

't Is stille! Neerstig tikt het ongedurig
hangend wezen,
waarop de weg naar 't eeuwige, in
twaalf stappen, staat te lezen.

't Is stille en middernacht! Als of
ik blind ware, om mij henen,
in donkere diepten schijnt het al
verduisterd en verdwenen.

't Is stille! Niets te zien en niets
te hooren, - 't doet mij beven! -
als 't altijd neerstig bijten van
den tijdworm aan ons leven!

Composition:

Set to music by (Kurt) Rudolf Mengelberg (1892 - 1959), "'t Is stille" [ voice and piano ]

Text Authorship:

  • by Guido (Pieter Theodoor Jozef) Gezelle (1830 - 1899), no title, written 1890?
