Jüngst in der Dämm'rung fuhr ich 
An einem See entlang, 
Laut durch die öde Stille  
Tönt eines Hornes Klang. 

Da war's mir, als entstiege 
Dem See ein holdes Weib 
Mit langen, goldnen Strähnen 
Und schlankem Schwanenleib. 

Es hub nun an zu singen 
Ein Lied so wundervoll, 
Daß mir dabei die Seele 
In süßem Zauber schwoll. 

Ein wunderseltsam Sehnen 
Durch ihre Tiefen ging, 
Und sieh'!  an meiner Wimper 
Eine heiße Thräne hing. 

Ich sah die Nixe winken 
Nach mir noch lange Zeit. 
Mein Sinnen war verloren 
In die Vergangenheit.  

Ich träumt' noch einmal wieder 
Zerronn'nen Liebestraum. 
Das Horn war längst verklungen  --  
Ich aber merkt es kaum.

Récemment, au crépuscule, je cheminais
Le long d’un lac,
Bruyamment, à travers le silence désolé,
Retentit le son d’un cor.

Alors, il me sembla
Qu'une gracieuse femme émergeait au dessus du lac,
Avec de longues mèches dorées
Et un corps mince comme celui d'un cygne.

Alors elle commença à chanter
Un chant si merveilleux
Que mon âme se gonfla
D’un douce magie.

Un désir étrange et mystérieux
La traversa profondément,
Et voyez ! sur mes cils
Une chaude larme perla.

Je vis la nymphe me faire signe
Pendant longtemps encore.
Mes pensées étaient perdues
Dans le passé.

Je rêvai encore une fois
D’un amour brisé.
Le son du cor s’était depuis longtemps éteint —
Mais je m’en rendis à peine compte.
