Meine Laute hab' ich gehängt an die Wand,
Hab' sie umschlungen mit einem grünen Band -
Ich kann nicht mehr singen, mein Herz ist zu voll,
Weiß nicht, wie ich's in Reime zwingen soll.
Meiner Sehnsucht allerheißesten Schmerz
Durft' ich aushauchen in Liederscherz,
Und wie ich klagte so süß und fein,
Glaubt' ich doch, mein Leiden wär' nicht klein.
Ei, wie groß ist wohl meines Glückes Last,
Daß kein Klang auf Erden es in sich faßt?

Nun, liebe Laute, ruh' an dem Nagel hier!
Und weht ein Lüftchen über die Saiten dir,
Und streift eine Biene mit ihren Flügeln dich,
Da wird mir so bange und es durchschauert mich.
Warum ließ ich das Band auch hängen so lang?
Oft fliegt's um die Saiten mit seufzendem Klang.
Ist es der Nachklang meiner Liebespein?
Soll es das Vorspiel neuer Lieder sein?

Note: early editions of Schubert's song (e.g. the 1830 Diabelli "Neue Ausgabe") have "Lieder Schmerz" or "Liederschmerz" instead of "Liederscherz" in stanza 1, line 6.

Το λαούτο μου έχω κρεμάσει στον τοίχο,
Το έχω τυλίξει με μία πράσινη κορδέλα-
Δεν μπορώ πια να τραγουδώ, η καρδιά μου είναι πολύ γεμάτη,
Δεν ξέρω πώς να την στριμώξω μέσα σε στίχους.
Της νοσταλγίας μου τον πιο καυτό πόνο
Μπόρεσα να σβήσω σε παιχνιδιάρικα τραγούδια,
Και καθώς παραπονιόμουν τόσο γλυκά και ευγενικά,
Πίστευα τότε πως ο πόνος μου δεν ήταν μικρός.
Ω, πόσο μεγάλο είναι άραγε το φορτίο της ευτυχίας μου,
Που κανένας ήχος στην γη δεν μπορεί να το κρατήσει;

Τώρα, αγαπημένο λαούτο, ησύχασε σ' αυτό εδώ το καρφί!
Και όταν φυσάει ένα αεράκι μέσα από τις χορδές σου,
Και σε αγγίζει μία μέλισσα με τα φτερά της,
Μου προκαλεί τόση ανησυχία, και ρίγος με διαπερνά.
Γιατί άφησα την κορδέλα να κρέμεται τόσον καιρό;
Συχνά πετάει γύρω από τις χορδές με ήχους αναστεναγμών.
Είναι αυτός ο απόηχος του καημού της αγάπης μου;
Μήπως πρέπει να είναι το προοίμιο νέων τραγουδιών;
