Euch wanket voll Sehnsucht der Leidende zu.
Er steht am Gestade, verkannt und allein,
in Wüsten des Lebens alleine, allein!

Er kam zu den Menschen so willig, so gut,
er trug in den Adern so glühendes Blut;
Er sah nach Gefährten, nach Antwort sich um,
doch alles war öde, doch alles war stumm.

Gefilde des Friedens, Gefilde der Ruh',
nur ihr weht Vollendung dem Leidenden zu.
Die Träume der Toten sind kühle und leicht;
wohl dem, der vom Ziele nicht ferne mehr schleicht!
