Das macht, es hat die Nachtigall
Die ganze Nacht gesungen;
Da sind von ihrem süssen Schall,
Da sind in Hall und Widerhall
Die Knospen aufgesprungen.
 
Sie war doch sonst ein wildes Kind,
Nun geht sie still in Sinnen,
Trägt in der Hand den Sommerhut
Und duldet still der Sonne Glut
Und weiß nicht, was beginnen.

Das macht, es hat die Nachtigall
Die ganze Nacht gesungen;
Da sind von ihrem süssen Schall,
Da sind in Hall und Widerhall
Die Knospen aufgesprungen.

ha cantato tutta la notte;
e per il suo dolce richiamo
e per l'eco che questo canto diffonde
sono sbocciate le rose.

Lei era in passato una fanciulla selvaggia,
ora cammina nei suoi pensieri assorta,
tiene nelle mani il cappello estivo,
sopporta paziente la vampa del sole
e non sa bene che fare.

Accade perché l'usignolo
ha cantato tutta la notte;
e per il suo dolce richiamo
e per l'eco che questo canto diffonde
sono sbocciate le rose.
