Durch zartes Mailaub blinkt die Abendröte
 (Sung text for setting by F. Hensel)
 See original
Language: German (Deutsch)
Durch zartes Mailaub blinkt die Abendröte;
der Duft des Grases, das die Sense mähte,
haucht lieblich her vom Erlenbach.
Vom Apfelbaum weh'n helle Blüten nieder,
die Nachtigall seufzt einsam Klagelieder,
und meine Seele hallt sie nach.

Du, mir Genoss einst, nun entrückt in Ferne,
mein Freund, o sahst du mich von deinem Sterne
und schwebtest im Gedüft herab?
O hauche Trost im linden Frühlingswehen!
Du glaubtest, hier noch lebend mich zu sehen;
du sahst mich nicht und sankst ins Grab!

Composition:
