Wo gehst du hin? (Joh. 16, 5)

Bleib, liebster Jesu, weil die Nacht
Das Tageslicht verjagt,
Damit des Satans List und Macht
Nicht meine Seele plagt!
Laß mit dem hingeschwundnen Licht
Die Gnade nicht vergehn,
Und wenn dem Geiste Kraft gebricht,
So hilf mir doch bestehn!
Denk nicht an meine Sündenschuld,
Dadurch ich dich betrübt;
Denk, wie du mich mit großer Huld
Am Kreuzesstamm geliebt!
O Vater, nimm dein armes Kind
In deinen Gnaden Schos;
Der Sorgen so im Herzen sind,
Mach du mich frei und los!
Wenn ich wie tot entschlafen bin,
So wach und laß mich nicht
Und fülle meinen müden Sinn
Im Traum mit deinem Licht!
Wenn mir's kann irgend nützlich sein,
So laß, o Herr, geschehn,
Daß ich der Sonne goldnen Schein
Mag freudig wieder sehn!
Soll aber, eh' die Nacht verschwindt,
Mein Leben untergehn,
So laß mich als ein Himmelskind
Vor deinem Throne stehn!

Abide, dearest Jesus, because the night
Is banishing the light of day,
So that Satan's cunning and power
Does not plague my soul!
Let not your mercy fade away
With the disappearing light,
And when my spirit lacks strength,
Help me to remain steadfast all the same!
Think not of the weight of my sins
Through which I have saddened Thee;
Think how with great grace
Thou didst love me when Thou wast upon the cross!
Oh Father, take Thy poor child
Into the bosom of Thy mercy;
Release Thou me of the anxieties that
Beset my heart and make me free!
When I have fallen asleep as if dead,
Then keep watch and do not leave me
And in my dreams fill my weary spirit
With Thy light!
If it can in any way be useful to me,
Then, Lord, let it happen
That I may joyfully see again
The golden radiance of the sun!
But if, before the night is gone,
My life must end,
Then let me as a child of Heaven
Stand before Thy throne!
