Die geweihte Nacht
(Sung text for setting by J. Anthes)
 Matches original text
Language: German (Deutsch)
Schweigt, ihr ernsten Glocken, schweiget!
Still, Getümmel, nah und fern!
Von dem hohen Himmel steiget
Die geweihte Nacht des Herrn!

Droben wohnt das klare Licht.
Hier auf Erden ist es nicht.
Geist empor! Mein Herz nach oben!
Lasset uns den Vater loben!

Von des ew'gen Lichtes Throne,
In ein Pilgerkleid gehüllt,
Kommt, daß er auf Erden wohne,
Er, des Vaters Ebenbild.

Heilige, geweihte Nacht,
Die das Kindlein uns gebracht,
Dir ertönen uns're Lieder!
Schweb', o schwebe sanft hernieder!
