Les Chansons
 (Sung text for setting by G. Strong)
 See original
Language: French (Français)
Sans vos nids, ô verts buissons
  Sans tes fleurs, prairie,
Sans musique, sans chansons,
  Que serait la vie ?
L’homme n’est qu’un pélerin
  D’un désert sans borne;
S’il n’a pas un gai refrain,
  Que sa vie est morne!

Sur nos têtes quand aux cieux
  Gronde quelque orage,
Vite, vite un chant joyeux ;
  On reprend courage.
Vous rendez la vie aux fleurs,
  Pleurs qu’épand l’aurore.
Et tu rends la joie aux cœurs,
  Ô chanson sonore.

Rossignols, au fond des bois,
  Vives alouettes,
Hirondelles sur nos toits,
  Ô charmants poëtes !
Vous chantez toujours pour nous ;
  Mais, ô voix perlées,
Nous avons, ainsi que vous,
  Nos chansons ailées.
