by Heinrich Heine (1797 - 1856)
Translation by Emma Lazarus (1849 - 1887)

Daß du mich liebst, daß wußt' ich
Language: German (Deutsch)
Daß du mich liebst, daß wußt' ich,
Ich hatt' es längst entdeckt;
Doch als du mir's gestanden,
Hat es mich tief erschreckt.

Ich stieg wohl auf die Berge
Und jubelte und sang;
Ich ging ans Meer und weinte
Beim Sonnenuntergang.

Mein Herz ist wie die Sonne
So flammend anzusehn,
Und in ein Meer von Liebe
Versinkt es groß und schön.

Love's Confession
 (Sung text for setting by E. Riley)
 See original
Language: English  after the German (Deutsch)
I knew that thou must love me --
   'Twas long ago made clear.
But thy confession filled me
   With deep and secret fear.

I clambered up the mountain,
   And sang aloud for glee.
Then while the sun was setting,
   I wept beside the sea.

My heart is like the sun, dear,
   Yon kindled flame above;
And sinks in large-orbed beauty
   Within a sea of love.

Composition:

    Set to music by Ellen Riley (1859 - 1904), as Ellen Wright, "Love's Confession" [ voice and piano ], New York : Boosey & Co, also set in German (Deutsch)

Text Authorship:
