Das Horn zu Ronceval
 (Sung text for setting by F. Kamm)
 See original
Language: German (Deutsch)
Das war ein tüchtig Streiten
  Zu Ronceval im Thal!
  Es troff auf beiden Seiten
  Von Blut der scharfe Stahl.
  Von Heid' und Christenrittern
  Sah man der Wunder viel;
  Das war ein Lanzensplittern,
  Ein lustig Würfelspiel!

Vor Allen aber Einer
   Warf stets den besten Pasch,
  Dem widerstand wohl Keiner,
  Der hieb so tief als rasch;
  Der strich die Eisenfiedel
  Auf blanker Helme Kranz,
  Und sang ein munter Liedel
  Vom Rhein und seinem Glanz.

Das war des Kaisers Vetter,
  Der starke Held Roland!
  Der schrieb im Kampfgeschmetter
  Die leserlichste Hand.
  Der ließ die Klinge kreisen,
  Als wär's ein Becher Wein,
  Und rief: "Sonst trink ich Weißen,
  Heut' schenk' ich Rothen ein.

 ...

Als Keiner mehr von Allen,
  So Christ, als Heide stand,
  Dann erst ist er gefallen,
  Der starke Held Roland!
  Am Schwert die müde Rechte,
  Bepurpurt Helm und Schild;
  Der erste im Gefechte,
  Der letzte im Gefild.

Doch eh' der Tod, so blutig,
  Ihn gänzlich übermannt,
  Greift er noch totesmuthig
  Sein Horn, den Olifant:
  "Den besten Gruß, mein Kaiser,
  Dir noch mit diesem Schall!"
  Und leis verklingt und leiser
  Das Horn zu Ronceval.
