Sei que pensar em ti não devo,
Nem o teu nome murmurar,
Que faço mal, quando isto escrevo,
Que é criminoso meu enlevo,
Que nada mais posso esperar;

Sei que de todo indifferente
Teu coração tornou-se a mim;
Sei que é forçoso que me ausente,
Que nem siquér te cumprimente
Si te encontrar... Não é assim?!

Sei... E me faz tão dura sorte
Penas cruéis. Mas também sei
Que tudo vence, que é tão forte
(Di-lo o Evangelho) quanto a morte
Isto que sento e sentirei.

Durou apenas um instante
Nossa loucura, mas foi tal
Que, como um ácido cortante,
N'alma gravou-me, penetrante,
Um profundíssimo signal.

Oh! A certeza me consterna
De que jamais serei feliz!
Jamais! Só a saudade me governa...
Guardo de ti lembrança eterna
Nessa indelével cicatriz.

Forever!
 (Sung text translation for setting by A. Nepomuceno)
 See original
Language: English  after the Portuguese (Português)
I know that I may not think of you,
Not murmur your name,
That I do wrong by writing this,
That my invocation is criminal,
That I may hope for nothing more;

I know that your heart
Has turned utterly indifferent towards me;
That I am forced to keep away from you,
That I may not even greet you
If I meet you... Is it not so?!

I know... And such a hard fate
Causes me cruel pain... But I also know
That everything conquers that is as strong
(Thus speaks the Bible) as death,
And thus I feel and shall I feel.

Our madness lasted only for a moment
But it was so intense
That, like a sharp acid,
It penetrated my soul and etched in it
A very deep mark.

Oh! the certainty consternates me
That I shall never be happy! Never!
Yearning alone shall rule me...
I keep an eternal remembrance of you
In this indelible scar.
