Tuch der Tränen
See original
Language: German (Deutsch)
Hände, viele Hände
Über der Heide schweben,
Die unsichtbar, ohn' Ende
Am Tuch der Thränen weben.
Die grauen Fäden gleiten,
damit es ewig hält,
Die Geisterhände breiten
Allnacht es über die Welt. --
Composition:
Set to music by Joseph Marx (1882 - 1964), "Tuch der Tränen", 1904, published 1912 [ high voice and piano ], in Lieder und Gesänge, II. Folge, Nr.12

Hands, many hands
Hover above the heath,
Unseen hands that unendingly
Weave at the cloth of tears.
The grey strands glide,
So that the cloth lasts forever,
The ghostly hands spread it
Over the world every night. --
