Sorgenvolle, wetterschwüle
Mädchenstirne, geh' zur Ruh!
Lieblich weht des Abends Kühle,
Werde kühl auch Du!
Träume, daß der Hauch der Nacht
Dir ein Palmenblatt gebracht,
Träume, geh zur Ruh!
Laß Dein Hangen, laß Dein Bangen,
Irrend Auge, schließ' Dich zu!
Sieh der Tag ist schlafen gangen,
Schlafen geh auch Du!
O das süßerlebte Glück
Spiegelt Dir der Traum zurück,
Schließ' dich, geh zur Ruh!

Set to music by Theodor Fürchtegott Kirchner (1823 - 1903), "Sorgenvolle, wetterschwüle Mädchenstirne", op. 3, Heft 2 no. 2, published 1852 [ soprano and piano ]

Anxiety-ridden, storm-oppressed
Maiden's brow, go to rest!
The evening’s coolness wafts beautifully,
You, too, become cooled!
Dream that the breath of night
Has brought you a palm frond,
Dream, go to rest!
Leave your fear, leave your trembling,
Close, errant eyes!
Lo, the day has gone to sleep,
You, too, go to sleep!
Oh the sweetly experienced happiness
Shall be reflected to you by your dreams,
Close, eyes, go to rest!
