Was giebt doch der Sonne den herrlichsten Glanz,
Der Rose den lieblichsten Duft?
Was schimmert und glühet im Sternenkranz
Und hauchet so still durch die Luft?
Was tönt in der Nachtigall sehnendem Lied,
Was singt sie im schattigen Hain?
Was murmelt der Bach, wenn er rastlos entflieht,
Was strahlet des Mondes Schein?

Die Liebe im Herzen, die Liebe allein
Giebt der Rose den Duft und der Sonne den Schein;
Der Nachtigall trillert der Liebe zum Preis,
Und die Liebe strahlt hell in dem Sternenkreis.
Des Baches Murmeln, des Mondes Glanz,
Der Lüfte Wehen, der Wellen Tanz --
Sie stimmen Alle mit Jubel ein:
Die Lieb' im Herzen ist Leben allein.
