Die einsame Mühle
(Sung text for setting by J. Rheinberger)
 See original
Language: German (Deutsch)
Einsame Mühle am Waldesrand,
steht so schweigend und stumm.
Wie auch das Wasser rauscht und braust,
Kein Rädchen dreht sich mehr um,

Morsch und zerfallen der kleine Steg,
Der zu der Kammer führt,
Rostig die Klinke am Eingangstor,
Lang hat sie keiner berührt.

Grollend stürzt sich der wilde Bach
Zwischen den Felsen hinab,
Und reißt vom Bau in schäumender Hast
Nun Stein um Steinchen herab.

Verlassene Mühle, vom Wasser umtost,
Still der Zerstörung harrt --
O, wie gleichest meinem Herzen du:
Mitten im Leben erstarrt!
