Das Mädchen am Ufer
See original
Language: German (Deutsch)
Es singt ein Vöglein, "witt, witt, witt,
Komm mit, komm mit!"
O könnt' ich Vöglein, mit dir ziehn,
Wir wollten über die Berge fliehn,
Durch die blauen, schönen Lüfte zumal,
Zu baden im warmen Sonnenstrahl.
Die Erd' ist eng, der Himmel weit;
Die Erd' ist arm, hat nichts als Leid;

A bird is singing, "Witt, witt, witt,
Come with me! Come with me!"
O if I could be a bird, wandering with you,
We wanted to fly across the mountains,
through the beautiful blue air above all,
To bathe in the warm sunbeam;
The earth is close, the sky wide;
the earth is poor, and holds nothing but suffering;
The sky, the sky is wide, and holds nothing but joy.
The little bird has already vaulted aloft,
whirling through the air with its sweet sound;
O little bird, God will protect you!
As I sit on the shore and cannot go with you.
