Mir vor der Seele schwebet,
Ein Mädchen, wie es steht und geht,
Aus Himmelsreiz gewebet.
Ich seh's, wenn in mein Fenster mild
Der junge Morgen blinket;
Ich seh's, wenn, lieblich wie das Bild,
Der Abendstern mir winket.
Mir folgt's, ein treuer Weggenoß
Zur Ruh' und ins Getümmel:
Ich fänd' es in der Erde Schooß;
Ich fänd' es selbst im Himmel.
Es schwebt vor mir in Feld und Wald,
Prangt über'm Blumenbeete,
Und glänzt in Seraphimsgestalt
Am Altar, wo ich bete.

Allein das Bild, das spät und früh

Ist's nur Geschöpf der Phantasie,
Aus Luft und Traum gewebet?
O nein! so warm auch Liebe mir
Das Engelbildniß mahlet;

Flotte devant mon âme,
Une jeune fille, comme si elle était debout et allait,
Faite de charmes célestes.
Je la vois quand à travers ma fenêtre
Le matin naissant brille doucement,
Je la vois quand aimablement, comme le portrait,
L'étoile du soir me fait des signes.
Elle me suit, fidèle compagne,
Dans le repos et dans la cohue,
Je la trouverais au centre de la terre,
Je la trouverais même au ciel.
Elle flotte devant moi dans les champs et le bois,
Resplendissante au-dessus des parterres de fleurs,
Et brillante sous la forme d'un séraphin
Sur l'autel où je prie.

Mais ce portrait, qui jour et nuit
Flotte devant mon âme,
Est-il seulement une créature de l'imagination,
Faite d'air et de rêves ?
Oh, non, car aussi doux qu'est l'amour
Que ce portrait angélique peint,
Ce n'est qu'une ombre d'ornement
Qui rayonne de la jeune fille.
