Feierlich leiert sein Lied in den düsteren Bäumen der Regen,
Über dem Waldgebirg weht schon erschauerndes Braun.
Freunde, der Herbst ist nah, schon äugt er lauernd am Wald hin;
Leer auch starret das Feld, nur von den Vögeln besucht.
Aber am südlichen Hang reift blau am Stabe die Traube,
Glut und heimlichen Trost birgt ihr gesegneter Schoß.
Bald wird alles was heut' noch in Saft und rauschendem Grün steht,
Bleich und frierend vergehn, sterben in Nebel und Schnee;
Nur der wärmende Wein und bei Tafel der lachende Apfel
Wird noch vom Sommer und Glanz sonniger Tage erglühn.
So auch altert der Sinn uns und kostet im zögernden Winter,
Dankbar der wärmenden Glut, gern der Erinnerung Wein,
Und von zerronnener Tage verflatterten Festen und Freuden
Geistern in schweigendem Tanz selige Schatten durchs Herz.
