Feierlich leiert sein Lied in den düsteren Bäumen der Regen, Über dem Waldgebirg weht schon erschauerndes Braun. Freunde, der Herbst ist nah, schon äugt er lauernd am Wald hin; Leer auch starret das Feld, nur von den Vögeln besucht. Aber am südlichen Hang reift blau am Stabe die Traube, Glut und heimlichen Trost birgt ihr gesegneter Schoß. Bald wird alles was heut' noch in Saft und rauschendem Grün steht, Bleich und frierend vergehn, sterben in Nebel und Schnee; Nur der wärmende Wein und bei Tafel der lachende Apfel Wird noch vom Sommer und Glanz sonniger Tage erglühn. La pluie psalmodie son chant sur les sombres arbres avec solennité, Une tempête effrayante souffle déjà sur la montagne couverte de forêts. Ami, l'automne est proche, il nous regarde, nous épiant de la forêt ; La campagne déserte aussi est figée, visitée seulement par les oiseaux. Mais sur la pente méridionale la grappe bleue mûrit sur le piquet, Cachant en ses entrailles bénies la passion et une secrète consolation. Tout ce qui aujourd'hui est encore verdure bruissante emplie de sève Passera bientôt, blême et gelé, mourra dans le brouillard et la neige ; Seuls le vin qui réchauffe et la souriante pomme sur la table Rayonneront encore de l'été et de l'éclat des jours ensoleillés. Nos sens vieillissent pareillement et dans l'hiver indécis aiment à goûter Le vin du souvenir, avec une chaleureuse reconnaissance, Et des jours enfuis, des fêtes et des joies disparues, Ombres bienheureuses, hantent mon cœur dans une danse silencieuse .
