Ein Leben war's im Ährenfeld,
Wie sonst wohl nirgend auf der Welt:
Musik und Kirmes weit und breit,
Und lauter Lust und Fröhlichkeit.
Die Grillen zirpten früh am Tag
Und luden ein zum Hochgelag:
« Hier ist es gut, herein, herein!
Hier schenkt man Tau und Blütenwein!»
Der Käfer kam mit seiner Frau,
Trank hier ein Mäßlein kühlen Tau,
Und wo nur winkt' ein Blümelein,
Da kehrte gleich das Bienchen ein.
Den Fliegen ward die Zeit nicht lang,
Sie summten manchen frohen Sang,
Die Mücken tanzten ihren Reih'n
Wohl auf und ab im Sonnenschein.
Das war ein Leben ringsumher,
Als ob es ewig Kirmes wär';
Die Gäste zogen aus und ein
Und ließen sich's gar wohl dort sein.
Wie aber geht es in der Welt?
Heut' ist gemäht das Ährenfeld,
Zerstöret ist das schöne Haus,
Und hin ist Kirmes, Tanz und Schmaus.

Hi havia una gran animació al camp d’espigues,
com enlloc arreu del món:
música i festa per tots costats,
i gran goig i alegria.
Els grills cantaven d’hora al matí
i convidaven a la xerinola:
“Aquí va de bo, veniu, veniu!
Aquí serveixen rosada i nèctar!”
L’escarabat vingué amb la seva dona,
i begué aquí un petit vas de rosada fresca,
i allà on una petita flor feia signes,
s’hi posà immediatament l’abella.
Les mosques no perderen el temps,
i brunziren moltes alegres cançons,
els mosquits ballaven en rotllana,
amunt i avall a la llum del sol.
Hi havia una gran animació tot a l’entorn
com si fos una festa eterna;
els convidats entraven i sortien
i allà s’hi trobaven molt bé.
Però com va el món?
Avui el camp d’espigues està segat,
destruïda al bella mansió,
i s’han acabat les festes, els balls i els tiberis.
