Ein Leben war's im Ährenfeld,
Wie sonst wohl nirgend auf der Welt:
Musik und Kirmes weit und breit,
Und lauter Lust und Fröhlichkeit.
Die Grillen zirpten früh am Tag
Und luden ein zum [Zechgelag]1:
« Hier ist es gut, herein, herein!
Hier schenkt man Tau und Blütenwein!»
Der Käfer kam mit seiner Frau,
Trank hier ein Mäßlein kühlen Tau,
Und wo nur winkt' ein Blümelein,
Da kehrte gleich das Bienchen ein.
Den Fliegen ward die Zeit nicht lang,
Sie summten manchen frohen Sang,
Die Mücken tanzten ihren Reih'n
Wohl auf und ab im Sonnenschein.
Das war ein Leben ringsumher,
Als ob es ewig Kirmes wär';
Die Gäste zogen aus und ein
Und ließen sich's gar wohl dort sein.
Wie aber geht es in der Welt?
Heut' ist gemäht das Ährenfeld,
Zerstöret ist das schöne Haus,
Und hin ist Kirmes, Tanz und Schmaus.

Le champ de blé

C'était toute une vie dans les épis,
Comme on n'avait jamais vue au monde.
Musique et kermesse de tous côtés,
Et grandes réjouissances et jovialités
Ce jour là les grillons avaient grésillé tôt
Et invité à une grande ripaille :
Par ici, c'est bon, venez ! venez !
Ici on sert de la rosée et du nectar !
Le scarabée est venu avec sa femme,
Il a bu un petit coup de rosée fraîche,
Et la où une petite fleur faisait signe,
Aussitôt l'abeille faisait halte.
Les mouches ne perdaient pas leur temps,
Elles fredonnaient maintes joyeuses chansons,
Les moustiques dansaient la ronde,
Montant et descendant dans les rayons de soleil.
C'était toute une vie alentour,
Comme si c'était une éternelle kermesse.
Les invités entraient et sortaient
Et se trouvaient très bien là-bas.
Mais comment va le monde ?
Aujourd'hui, les épis sont fauchés,
La belle maison est détruite,
Et finis kermesse, danse et festin.
