by Johann Gottfried Herder (1744 - 1803)

Die Gegenwart
 (Sung text for setting by H. Nägeli)
 See original
Language: German (Deutsch)
     Dunkler Ocean umgürtet
Unsre Erd' und unser Leben.
Fluten rauschen über Fluten,
Auf den Fluten ruhen Wolken,
Dunkler Abgrund ist die Zukunft.
          Nur die Gegenwart ist sicher;
          Jüngling, auf! und genieße sie.

 ...

     Wie der Tag, so glänzt dein Antlitz,
Wie die Nacht ist deine Locke,
Deine Lippen Morgenröthe.
Morgenroth und Tag und Nächte,
Auch die schönsten fliehn vorüber.
          Nur die Gegenwart ist sicher;
          Jüngling, auf! und genieße sie.

Note: A "D." appeared at the end of the original text; Herder is now understood to be the author. In Nägeli's score, no text author is indicated.

Composition:

    Set to music by Hans Georg Nägeli (1773 - 1836), "Die Gegenwart", published [1799], stanzas 1,3 [ voice and piano ], in Lieder in Musik gesetzt, Zürich: im Verlage des Verfassers, Dritte Sammlung, pages 16 - 17; note: Goethe-Museum catalog attributes text to "[Diez]" - perhaps the "D." mentioned above?

Text Authorship:

  • by Johann Gottfried Herder (1744 - 1803), "Die Gegenwart", subtitle: "Ein Persisches Lied", from Friedrich Schiller: Musen-Almanach für das Jahr 1796
