So schlaf' in Ruh!
Die Zeitlos' und die Tulpe nickt,
Auf daß der Schlaf auch sie erquickt.
Die Äugelein zu!
Mein Kindlein du!
So schlaf' in Ruh!
...
So schlaf' in Ruh!
Die Sternlein leuchten hell und klar,
Es kommt von dort der Engel Schaar,
Die Äugelein zu!
Mein Kindlein du,
So schlaf' in Ruh!
So schlaf' in Ruh!
Es kommt auch einer her und wacht,
Mein Kind, bei dir die ganze Nacht.
Die Äugelein zu!
Mein Kindlein du,
So schlaf' in Ruh!
So schlaf' in Ruh!
Er breitet seine Flügel aus,
Und singt: O segne Gott dies Haus!
Die Äugelein zu!
Mein Kindlein du,
So schlaf' in Ruh!
Note: the text above is taken from stanzas 1,4-6 of the original text.
Note: in many older editions, the spelling of the word "Äugelein" becomes "Aeugelein", but as can be seen in how "über" becomes "Ueber" when capitalized, this is due to the printing process and not to rules of orthography, so we use "Äugelein".
Composition:
Set to music by Felix Mendelssohn (1809 - 1847), "So schlaf in Ruh!", 1838, stanzas 1,4-6 [ voice and piano ]

Sleep in peace then!
The crocus and the tulip are nodding,
So that sleep may refresh them as well.
Close your little eyes!
You, my child,
Sleep in peace then
...
Sleep in peace then!
The little stars are sparkling brightly and clearly,
From where they are a host of angels comes.
Close your little eyes!
You, my child,
Sleep in peace then
Sleep in peace then!
One angel also comes here and watches,
My child, beside you all night long.
Close your little eyes!
You, my child,
Sleep in peace then
Sleep in peace then!
He spreads his wings
And sings: May God bless this house!
Close your little eyes!
You, my child,
Sleep in peace then
